Japan in Global Context. Papers presented on the Occasion of the Fifth Anniversary of the German Institute for Japanese Studies, Tōkyō

The papers collected in this volume were presented by specialists from all over the world on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the German Institute for Japanese Studies on November 4 and 5, 1993, in Tokyo. The contributions deal with the characteristics of Japanese culture and society as well as the structure and aims of international research on Japan. By providing current insights on tasks and problems in this field of studies this volume will serve as useful reference for anyone attempting to approach the “Japan phenomenon.” The book is completed by a list of the publications and activities of the Institute since its founding.
