Research and innovation are of vital importance to the competitiveness and welfare of leading industrial economies such as Japan and Germany. How do the two countries perform in this respect? The two speakers, both outstanding scholars and experts in the field, will assess the strengths and weaknesses of their respective national systems of research and innovation. After the two presentations, the similarities and differences between the two countries will be further elaborated in a discussion among the two speakers followed by an open Q&A with the floor.
Professor Tateo Arimoto is Director of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Program at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies and Deputy Director General of the Center for R&D Strategy, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). He has in the past been intensely involved in Japan’s science and technology policy making.
Professor Dietmar Harhoff is director of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, Germany. He is also chairman of the Commission of Experts on Research and Innovation (EFI) which regularly reports to the German government.
Franz Waldenberger, Director of DIJ, will introduce the speakers and moderate the discussion.
